My name is Alex Thomson. I’m a 21 year old Product Design Engineering student and photographer based in Glasgow, Scotland.
I grew up in Edinburgh and moved to Glasgow to study engineering and product design at the University of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art, where I’m now in the fourth year of my five-year MEng degree. Alongside my studies, I lead Electric Vehicle Operations within University of Glasgow Racing (UGRacing), a 150-strong team of students designing and building a fully electric race car to compete in the international Formula Student competition. My role blends leadership, engineering, and project management, and involves working with students and professionals from a range of backgrounds and industries.
My photography began as a simple habit, taking photos of details and moments that stood out to me. As I grew up, it became something more deliberate. I found myself drawn to capturing images in ways that weren’t obvious, creating new compositions and perspectives from familiar scenes. I always aim to turn my subject into something more than just a simple snapshot, capturing a feeling or perspective that isn’t immediately apparent.
That approach remains central to my work today, which spans a wide range of photographic disciplines. I shoot sports, portraiture and fashion, music and nightlife, architecture, and events. I’m currently the resident photographer for Stride Athletics, a growing media outlet showcasing competitive running events across the UK, and I regularly shoot for events at the University of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art. I’ve also worked with local DJs and bands across Scotland, collaborated with model and actress Eunice Olumide on campaigns for Gucci and Longchamp, and continue to build long-term relationships with clients and creative teams.
Looking ahead, I want to continue building on the work I’m doing now, taking on more creative projects, collaborating with new people, and pushing myself to develop a style and reputation I can be proud of. At the same time, I’m excited to finish my degree and take my first steps into the design and engineering world, while helping UGRacing push closer to the Formula Student podium once again.
At its core, everything I do comes from the same place: curiosity, creativity, and a desire to produce work that has a meaningful impact.
